Global Update: LEGOLAND Malaysia

If you’re one of those kids that can get to Malaysia with your friends only, then great. Otherwise a parent/guardian is advised to help with immigration, driving, keeping stuff and all that. This place might be a bit confusing, though, for kids and parents alike. Simply, Legoland is behind the Mall of Medini, so just park near the entrance to the mall (or take the bus), walk through, and you’ll arrive at Legoland! Beware the chance of an extremely hot day, and bring water, hats, and sunscreen. The lines might be very long. It’s quite fun for families and friends who enjoy medium rides (the two scariest roller-coasters don’t even have flips), but not really for thrill riders. 6th graders might still find it enjoyable, but 8th graders who like gut-twisting rides won’t find much here, except a lot of Lego stuff. Has many stalls and restaurants to purchase refreshments along the way. You can observing the miniland, build your own car or robot, or watch a 4D movie. For a one-day trip, go early to enjoy all the attractions. Overall an okay experience for the average middle-schooler.

Drama Camp 2012

On November 13th, some of our i of the Tiger club members were involved in a drama camp with two incredible artists. They'd like to share their experience here. Thank you Sherri and Matt for sharing your talents and thank you PTA and Ms. Fulcher for making it all possible.

Improvisation by Becca
On Tuesday the 13th professional Actor/comedian came to SAS to teach drama students how to use the art of improvisation. I played many games to get into the skill of improvisation, my favorites were World Expert; where you improv on any subject. Superhero; where you call on ‘superheroes’ to save the day, and I liked 5 Point Story; where you make a random story with 5 main points. In the end we did a performance in front of our parents. If this happens again I want to know about it.

Clowning by Henrik
Hi, I’m Henrik, and I did clowning too. I GOT A RED NOSE! Anyways... I learned a lot about how to be a good clown, I mean, I already know how to be clown, but not a clown clown. I never wore a red big nose on my face, and wore really weird clothes. In fact, I WORE A DRESS! And I thought it was a really fun learning experience for me, and even though it was during my vacation, I really really enjoyed myself, and if it happens again, I wanna go.

It definitely was a strange sight: a bunch of middle school kids in weird costumes, to say the least, with red noses, and dancing their hearts out. Some were wearing buckets for hats, others Angry Birds bags, some were wearing three hats, some were wearing pants on their head, but all had a hat on, obeying the basic rules of clowning: a clown is naked without a hat. And then there were the clothes: dresses on boys, military jackets, torn sweatshirts. All in all, it was a very strange sight. This was the clowning activity in the Deepavali drama camp: an 8-hour long crazy workshop full of fun and laughter and clowning. We learned a lot about the art of clowning: about letting yourself go and exposing your raw emotions, about being yourself, about charging each other on ‘horses’ i.e. our butts. Fun, fun, fun. A must-try.

ISTA Festival at CIS by Mika

A couple weeks ago I was one of the participants at the ISTA (International Schools Theater Association) festival held here in Singapore at the Canadian International School. ISTA is a three day festival, that includes you working in an ensemble with a mixture of different kids from different schools. You create little ensemble pieces that connect in some way to the overall theme of the final performance. On day one we did workshops with artists, that help you some way in theater. On day two you have an out and about to get to see Singapore and work  outside the school, a pizza dinner and a social (dance). On day three you work in the ensemble and put on a final show, with the actors doing their pieces and the tech ensemble running the show (props, lights, sound etc.).

Overall, I feel ISTA boosted my confidence, and got us comfortable with being on stage. It was also a great way to get to know your peers a little more and make new friends from other schools! ISTA has an audition process, and takes up 2 school days and 1 Saturday with a fee. It is really fun and great for people interested in acting and tech!

Hello one and all!

As you probably didn’t notice, the deadline for the photo contest has passed. With a next-to-nil number of entries. (Thank you people who did enter! It is GREATLY appreciated.) So have a look at the rules again and get snapping! The deadline has been extended to whenever we get the first ten submissions. They automatically qualify for student voting. So if you submit your photo after we get ten submissions.... down go your chances. Really, how hard is it to take a photo? And submit it Whip out your iPhone/iTouch, click something, then hit send to Ms. Dowd. Piece of cake. If you take the time to take a picture with an actual camera, how long does it take to upload the pic to you computer?


So snap, snap, snap! And snap to it!
