The World's Saddest Dolphins by Tanvi

Most of us have been to Sentosa. To Resorts World. Perhaps you’ve stayed in their hotel, gone to Universal Studios. Maybe you’ve gone to Dolphin Lagoon. Resorts World Sentosa recently imported 27 wild dolphins to furnish their newly opened ‘oceanarium’. Of those 27, three have died so far- two from their confinement before import and one from the plane ride. Are you going to visit the oceanarium? Because you’d better halt your plans. Keeping whales and dolphins in captivity is cruel and harmful. Check out the conditions they live in:

The pool is dirty and cramped for animals used to the wide open ocean. It’s no wonder ACRES (Animal Concerns Research and Education Society) has called its campaign against it ‘Saddest Dolphins’. If you’re one of those kids that can get to Malaysia with your friends only, then great. Otherwise a parent/guardian is advised to help with immigration, driving, keeping stuff and all that. This place might be a bit confusing, though, for kids and parents alike. Simply, Legoland is behind the Mall of Medini, so just park near the entrance to the mall (or take the bus), walk through, and you’ll arrive at Legoland! Beware the chance of an extremely hot day, and bring water, hats, and sunscreen. The lines might be very long. It’s quite fun for families and friends who enjoy medium rides (the two scariest roller-coasters don’t even have flips), but not really for thrill riders. 6th graders might still find it enjoyable, but 8th graders who like gut-twisting rides won’t find much here, except a lot of Lego stuff. Has many stalls and restaurants to purchase refreshments along the way. You can observing the miniland, build your own car or robot, or watch a 4D movie. For a one-day trip, go early to enjoy all the attractions. Overall an okay experience for the average middle-schooler.

Drama Camp 2012

On November 13th, some of our i of the Tiger club members were involved in a drama camp with two incredible artists. They'd like to share their experience here. Thank you Sherri and Matt for sharing your talents and thank you PTA and Ms. Fulcher for making it all possible.

Improvisation by Becca
On Tuesday the 13th professional Actor/comedian came to SAS to teach drama students how to use the art of improvisation. I played many games to get into the skill of improvisation, my favorites were World Expert; where you improv on any subject. Superhero; where you call on ‘superheroes’ to save the day, and I liked 5 Point Story; where you make a random story with 5 main points. In the end we did a performance in front of our parents. If this happens again I want to know about it.

Hi, I’m Henrik, and I did clowning too. I GOT A RED NOSE! Anyways... I learned a lot about how to be a good clown, I mean, I already know how to be clown, but not a clown clown. I never wore a red big nose on my face, and wore really weird clothes. In fact, I WORE A DRESS! And I thought it was a really fun learning experience for me, and even though it was during my vacation, I really really enjoyed myself, and if it happens again, I wanna go.

It definitely was a strange sight: a bunch of middle school kids in weird costumes, to say the least, with red noses, and dancing their hearts out. Some were wearing buckets for hats, others Angry Birds bags, some were wearing three hats, some were wearing pants on their head, but all had a hat on, obeying the basic rules of clowning: a clown is naked without a hat. And then there were the clothes: dresses on boys, military jackets, torn sweatshirts. All in all, it was a very strange sight. This was the clowning activity in the Deepavali drama camp: an 8-hour long crazy workshop full of fun and laughter and clowning. We learned a lot about the art of clowning: about letting yourself go and exposing your raw emotions, about being yourself, about charging each other on ‘horses’ i.e. our butts. Fun, fun, fun. A must-try.

A couple weeks ago I was one of the participants at the ISTA (International Schools Theater Association) festival held here in Singapore at the Canadian International School. ISTA is a three day festival, that includes you working in an ensemble with a mixture of different kids from different schools. You create little ensemble pieces that connect in some way to the overall theme of the final performance. On day one we did workshops with artists, that help you some way in theater. On day two you have an out and about to get to see Singapore and work  outside the school, a pizza dinner and a social (dance). On day three you work in the ensemble and put on a final show, with the actors doing their pieces and the tech ensemble running the show (props, lights, sound etc.).

Overall, I feel ISTA boosted my confidence, and got us comfortable with being on stage. It was also a great way to get to know your peers a little more and make new friends from other schools! ISTA has an audition process, and takes up 2 school days and 1 Saturday with a fee. It is really fun and great for people interested in acting and tech!

As you probably didn’t notice, the deadline for the photo contest has passed. With a next-to-nil number of entries. (Thank you people who did enter! It is GREATLY appreciated.) So have a look at the rules again and get snapping! The deadline has been extended to whenever we get the first ten submissions. They automatically qualify for student voting. So if you submit your photo after we get ten submissions.... down go your chances. Really, how hard is it to take a photo? And submit it Whip out your iPhone/iTouch, click something, then hit send to Ms. Dowd. Piece of cake. If you take the time to take a picture with an actual camera, how long does it take to upload the pic to you computer?

Wyldlife! by Bryanna

You may have seen the green posters around school, labeled WYLDLIFE. Well what is wyldlife? Wyldlife is a youth group that gets together every other week on saturday night to have a night filled with funny stunts, hilarious games and great laughs with your friends.

See, Wyldlife is a christian youth group but anyone can come to get to know God. To come, it is totally free and there is no registration or anything. Each club is hosted at the YMCA. Every club has a theme, for example, one of the nights was mustache themed another was neon themed. Occasionally wyldlife goes out and has a bowling night, pool party or something fun like that. Of course when you go out bowling or something, you have to pay a little though.

Wyldlife is REALLY fun and I hope you and your friends can come next time!

Fall Beauty: How to Create Autumn Eyes by Amira

Everyone needs a new look for fall! Follow these simple instructions to get the most adorable and stylish eyes of the season.

Step 1: Wash you face first using a gentle facial cleanser. You don’t want to apply makeup to a dirty face!

Step 2: Put on a light facial moisturizer. This keeps your skin fresh throughout the day. You never want to have cracked, dry, unhealthy skin. Do you?

Step 3: (Optional) Apply a base coat to your eyes. I recommend bareMinerals Prime Time Eyelid Primer. This product is just $18. Use your finger to gently rub it around the outer area of your eyelid. Smooth it towards the inner core.

Step 4: Apply a matte lavender eyeshadow to the inner corner using an eyeshadow application brush.

Step 5: Next apply violet shimmer eyeshadow to the outer part of your eye. Blend the two colors together using the same brush in Step 4.

Step 6: Using a crease brush, apply glittery metallic purple eyeshadow to the crease.


Step 7: (Optional) Lightly apply a black mascara to your lashes to give them a fuller look.

Great for students who think they can be Tarzan and for people who are. This course boasts a maze of ropes laced between trees and not one, not two, but four giga zip lines that stretch across the center lake. For people who want to make their adventure even harder, there are branches of the main course that double the challenge. Be careful though, break their rules two times and you’re off. Note the weather because lightning warnings also can call off your adventure. This place is also great for birthdays, and they provide cake and drinks on such an occasion. A bit expensive.

Wild Wild Wet is the best rated waterpark in Singapore. Get lost in the playground, scream on the slides, or sleep in the wave pool and river. Holds the first raft slide in Singapore, a thrilling 4-storey halfpipe, and a maze of regular slides as well as a gigantic playground. Tubes are provided without charge, but on a first-come-first-serve basis. Lockers are provided but be careful, as you can only use them once. Has numerous food stalls inside, but does not allow food to be brought in.

Calling all Middle School students! Whether it be an iPhone, webcam, or a hi-tech, all-the-unnecessary-equipment-provided Nikon, nearly all of us have access to a camera nowadays. Let’s make use of this access! Welcome the first Middle School-wide photography contest. It is purely online, and all updates will be on this website. Discover your inner shutterbug. Whip your camera out and start snapping anything that interests you! And I haven’t even mentioned the best part yet: the judges. Are. YOU! After the due dates have passed, we will launch a survey on this blog allowing you to decide on your favorite photo! Then the results will be published and the winner(s) will have their photo displayed on this website for all to see and envy till the next contest.

The JCube Ice Skating Rink is the first Olympic-size skating rink in Singapore, this place sports a 30 m by 60 m stadium of real ice. Slip and slide through the ice to the music played through the speakers. It has 430 spectator seats and changing rooms. It has a great first-aid team. Don’t try to buy a penguin helper for you non-skaters, it’s only for kids under 10 years. Bring your own socks and gloves, it costs more to rent. There are also many restaurants around, so you can eat once you’re hungry. There are 15 minute intervals between the two hour sessions for the Zamboni.

10 Tips and Tricks you can Use on Google


Nowadays, the internet has become the new way the world gets information. How do we do this? Well, for starters, we search it up on Google. In fact, people search google so much that some dictionaries have listed down “Google” as a verb. However, we have figured out that you can also have fun with google. People all around the world have been exploiting easter eggs that google secretly embedded into the programming of the google search engine itself. We are here to help share the secrets, and let everyone know about the fun you can have with google. Now, let’s see the easter eggs!


EASTER EGG #1:
Did you know that if you search up “askew” or “tilt” on google, the page will be slightly tilted? It is disorienting to use, yet fun to share with others. A neat little trick.


EASTER EGG #2:
You can search up “Do a barrel roll” and your entire google page will turn 360 degrees! I warn you though, you may see a the end of google (A white screen)!

EASTER EGG #3:
You can type in “Goglogo” on google and hit the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button to see a webpage where you can enter your name where it says “Enter Your Name”. Then, you will have a custom google page with YOUR NAME in place of google! Unfortunately, you can’t search google with it, which is awfully sad, but you can take a picture of it and show it off to your friends!

EASTER EGG #4:
Okay, this is a really special one just because it’s one you can entertain yourself with for a long time! This trick is, you go to http://www.google.com/pacman/ and you can hit the “Insert Coin” button. Then, you can play pacman! Only, it’s not the same obstacles as pacman. The obstacles are GOOGLE!

EASTER EGG #5:
Google will love you once you search this up on google. Simply type in “(sqrt(cos(x))*cos(200x)+sqrt(abs(x))-0.7)*(4-x*x)^0.01, sqrt(9-x^2), -sqrt(9-x^2) from -4.5 to 4.5” and have see google have a big blue heart. Of course, we probably could never do that yourself with that kind of calculation, but google can!

EASTER EGG #6:

Google is the master beatbox now when you go to this website and hit the speaker button. It actually says “Beatbox” when you hover over it!

EASTER EGG #7:

If you search up “The answer to life, the universe, and everything” on google, it will bring up google calculator and it will say “The answer to life, the universe, and everything = 42”. I wonder why they chose 42...

EASTER EGG #8:

Google Calculator appears to know everything! Search up “The number of horns on a unicorn”, and it will tell you exactly how many horns a unicorn has! Now, the question is, where is the unicorn Google is keeping to get this information...

EASTER EGG #9:

If you search up “recursion”, it will ask you: “Did you mean: Recursion?”.  That’s funny, because the meaning of recursion is actually repeating things in a self-similar way. You can click on the Recursion in “Did you mean: Recursion” forever! Google has created their own infinite loop.

EASTER EGG #10:
And last but not least, you can search up “Once in a blue moon” to get Google to tell you exactly this:
